Special Advent Calendar

This is long overdue blog post, and I will be the first one to admit it.

Mid October I asked a very creative lady to alter the very popular Kasier Craft Advent Calendar and after tossing the idea around abit, she agreed. It took her a few weeks to deliver this stunning result but then trying to juggle crafting into the full time job of parenting two young and active boys is a challenge, to say the least.

Without further ado, here is a picture of the Advent Calendar, as altered by Heather Millar.

This is a three dimensional project that must be seen in person to appreciate the level of detail and sheer artistry that went into creating it. I have had it in my possession since the beginning of November (i think) and it has literally stopped people in their tracks with it's uniqueness and beauty. I will have it in store to view for another few weeks, and then will be reluctantly handing it back to her for her family to enjoy in the coming years.

Heather goes into more detail on her blog Heathers Hints of Happiness as to the products she uses and the techniques and tips about doing this project. Please go visit her blog to see more pictures and possibly learn something new! I have to keep ordering more advent calendar kits in as they are selling like hotcakes, so if you are interested in picking up this kit, please call us at 613-745-2215.

Thanks again Heather - I hope that you are still willing to do more 'samples' in the future!

Tim Tags Start tonite!!!!

If I am reading Tim's Blog correctly, tomorrow morning at 3:01am EST Tim will be posting his first Holiday Tag. The tension and the anticipation has been building since he made his announcement last week (well lets be honest - its been building since Halloween!!!) and I know a lot of my customers will be tuning in to see what the King of Craft has in store for us this December!

I want to help you out - you want to make the tags. I know you do! So I will repost what I wrote in my Members-only Newsletter. You may want to check it out. =)
****************************************************************************

I want to put together (*IF POSSIBLE*) Daily Tag Kits based on Tim's 2011 Holiday Tags. I understand that the challenge to my customers is to find all of the 'stuff' without dropping a bundle each day. I am proposing that I will break open whole packages of Tim's Ideo-logy, Grunge products, Kraft glassine paper and Ranger products and create kits for purchase, and price them accordingly.

My challenge is going to be able to do this in a timely fashion but one must understand that I cannot predict what he is going to do (I wish!) and that some things I may have to order in and that can take a few days.

I will try to keep the costs of each 'kit' down to about $10 or less for each tag and will not include any 'wet' mediums of inks, paints, stains and so forth.

Also, I cannot guarantee that each kit will have the exact same 'thing'. Muse tokens all have different sayings on them - but the first person in can have first choice if you know what I mean.

The advantages to you is that you don't have to run around town to find the 'bits' you need to make a close copy of Tim's Tags, and a great deal of the prep has been taken care of already PLUS the greatly reduced cost. Because of all of this, the 15% Member discount will not apply to these kits. They will be sold for the sticker price.

If you want to be a part of this and purchase all of the kits, you can subscribe by replying to this email. I can guarantee that you will get all 12 kits (or all the kits that I am able to make) and will hold them for you. I know December is going to be busy for you but how fun would it be to whip up a tag or two in an evening of creativity?

Speaking of an evening of Creativity - on Fri December 9th, I will be hosting a Tim Holtz Tag Event!!! FREE!

I have A LOT of Tim's Dies, folders and stamps that I am happy to share with all of you! Not sure how to do a particular technique? Why not let this Ranger Certified educator help you out? I am here for you to exploit folks!!!

This will be the first time I am doing anything like this and I hope you will help by making suggestions and provide helpful feedback.  Call me at the store at 613-745-2215!

The Scrapbox Craft Fair Update!

Greetings!

It's another fine week and I am already looking forward to the end of it - because we are doing something BRAND NEW at The Scrapbox this Saturday and that is always something exciting! This time we are doing a show of the end product, the finished craft, the handmade treasure ready to go into your home or under someone's tree!

We have 14 very talented and (even better) local artisans who can't wait to show you their beautiful creations, and I would like to introduce one right now!

Her name is Cat Laforce and she is the owner of "Littlest Mama" - a crafting business that combines her love of sewing with one of the latest smartest recycle ideas : Upcycling.

What is upcycling? (Taken from her website littlestmama.com)

It's the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or a higher environmental value. I like to think of it as a great way to see and get use out of something I already love!

An awesome idea! After further checking out her website, I just LOVE what I see! Adorable clothing for children as well as practical! I can't wait to see it in real life! If you know of any expectant families, this is one to check out for sure this Saturday, Nov 26th at The Scrapbox Studio's First Craft Show!

And the Winners are..

...of the Ribbon Ball, Heather Price! She was .5 of a yard off the total! In fact there were 5 people who were exactly .5 of a yard off the total, so we put their name back into the bag and drew out Heather's name...congrats Heather!

And of the Grand Prize Draw Winner is Cindy McLean! Cindy's name was drawn by my Mom, who has now been with me for the 5th year in a row (cause she was here when I opened...plus 4 Anniversaries...=)

Anyways...I have been a bit under the weather this last week and so have been enjoying some serious down time offline with my family. But before I went to bed, I wanted to announce the winners, and thank everyone who participated in the fun, events and crops. I hope you enjoyed yourself and are looking forward to the coming year of crafting!

I'm off to bed...

A Scrapbooker's Creed

I just released the following in my weekly newsletter. If you think that you resemble any of the following behaviours...well you are in good company. Enjoy.

The Scrapbookers Creed

I am a Scrapbooker. I Scrapbook.  You won’t understand it until you are one too. When you want to spend all your spare time (and occupied time) scrapbooking. When you take 10 pictures to get one good one, and shuffle people around in a staged photo so that their clothing doesn’t clash. When you purchase matching Christmas Pyjamas so that on that special morning, everyone coordinates (and if you hadn’t thought about it, you now want to go out and do it). When you have a camera, or camera-phone with you everywhere you go “just in case”.

There are 9 different shades of white, I don’t care what you say.

I am a Scrapbooker and I like to shop. I will hunt down a Scrapbooking Store if I am in a different city, because  I know they will have something my LSS won’t have, and  that will impress “the girls” at the next crop. I like to shop when I am happy, tired, depressed, had an argument with my spouse/kid/boss/mother—in-law, or  every Wednesday after work because that’s when the new stuff comes in. I will box dive because getting it first, even if I don’t know what I am going to use it for, is like finding treasure and I NEED it!

What happens at the crop, stays at the crop.

We are Scrapbookers. At Crops we will laugh, talk, eat, talk, cry, talk, drink, talk, shop, and there will always be a little drama. We compare spouses, past and present, the boss that drives us crazy, and how sick our kids were last week. We talk about giving birth or why we can’t, and then we cry some more. Sometimes we will cut some paper and stick it down on other pieces of paper but let’s not kid ourselves about what’s important…that every hour cropping  is not an hour spent at work or hip-deep in housework, staring at piling bills or four walls closing in fast.

Scrapbooking is cheaper than Therapy.

The owner of my LSS is an ear that listens, a brain to pick, and the enabler of my addiction. Her store is full of colour on the most dismal of days, when weather is cold and dreary, and a free cup of coffee when the soul feels bare and chilled. I go to my LSS and find friends from years ago or make new ones that are ‘the girls’ for the years to come. I go there when I don’t need anything, except a place to recover from the wounds dealt by life. It is where I play and my happy place.

I am a Scrapbooker, a Cardmaker, a Mixed-Media Artist and Painter and I love what I am.

Last Day of Michaels Coupon Sale!

This week I decided to let the other guys advertise for me! If you are a member and have a valid 40% or 50% off coupon from Michael's, I am honouring one per Scrapbox Member this week! Today is the last day of the sale so start clipping or printing! I do require a hardcopy of the coupon so be sure to have it in your purse!

I am open today from 9am to 6pm and while the schedule says it's a crop today, I have LOTS of space in the studio for anyone to drop by and crop if they wish. You don't have to come for the whole day - just a few hours to come keep me company. Otherwise I am going to be working on my new Art Journal (Thank you Eklectik Diva!) and tidying up around the studio. And updating my website. Maybe some paperwork too...

Anyways - hope you are enjoying your Saturday and that you had a fun and safe Canada Day yesterday! The Langlois clan spent it close to home doing restful things and appreciating the awesome country that we are blessed to live in, and honouring those who keep it safe for us.

Art Journal V. 1

A few months ago I joined an Art Journal exchange. Seven talented ladies created and passed on, created and passed on each others journals and not seeing more than a hint of their own for months! Well, I finally got mine back last Friday night and I was wowed by the talent I saw! I was also quite pleased with how well my own contributions were received, so I thought I would toss them up here. It's been over 6 months since I resolved to 'Play' this year, and this has been an important part of that.

Upon reviewal, my style was definatly eclectic. I think because I tried to make something personal for the receipient. Perhaps tomorrow, I will show some pics of the work done in my journal and see if you think they got me figured out =)

Hope you have a great day! I just sent out the newsletter too so you should be seeing that in your inbox!

Scrapbox YardSale!!!

I am at the store extra early today so that I can let in the yard sale vendors - ladies like you and me who just have too much stuff in their craft room and are now letting their gently used scrapbooking and crafting supplies go for a REAL BARGAIN! It starts at 9am and goes until 12 noon!

What can you expect to find? How about a table bursting with nearly new or never used Stampin' Up Stamps? Totes? Paper and embellishments? I've seen crafting magazines, stickers, ribbon and BEAUTIFUL fabric squares just waiting to be made into flowers. What a great way to spend a damp Saturday morning - in the dry comforts of the Scrapbox Studio (no we are not holding this outside!).

You are not going to want to miss this fabulous sale - you can even pay with Debit, Credit Card or cash at the front! No need to go to the bank for cash!

Oh and the store is open for shopping too if you want =)

Thanks!

Ranger U...I hardly knew ye!

I am sitting in the Newark Airport waiting for my first flight out. I look around me and I see 4 out of 5 people connected to either a laptop, cellphone or both. It’s interesting to me how much we are connected to the rest of the world with devices that can be carried in our hands and yet be strangers face to face.

This weekend has been so momentous, both on the world stage as well as personally. Events are happening so quickly that I am needing a pause to collect my breath and so I suppose that today, when forced to sit idle in airports or in the air, I will take that opportunity to reflect.

Our morningn walk to school...

some fun with Alcohol inks!

Learning a new way to resist...

Love this stamp from hero Arts..

Here it is again...

More pics of the Jersey Shore

I love this photo - it just makes me lean to the right...

I can almost feel the winds of change brushing past my cheek and watering my eyes.
World events aside, my weekend completed itself in a predictable fashion. All day yesterday, we created the last of the 75 technique tags under the charismatic and witty tutelage of Tim, and being utterly spoiled by Mario and all the thoughtful staff at Ranger. We received certificates, pats on the back, group photos and a very very generous educators package of product from Ranger. I got my very first melting pot and I am SOOOOOOO jazzed. I simply can’t wait to make stuff! Tim was kind enough to sign a few items for the NSD crop and for me personally.
Did you know that slices of pickle can sooth a burn? I did not know that. I didn’t need any pickles this weekend which in and of itself is remarkable.
As my larger piece of luggage got damaged in the travel to NJ, I decided to have my box of goodies shipped to Ogdensburg NY to pick up later this week. Less hassle over all.
After the closing ceremonies, we went out last night again to the Jersey Shore for Sushi and I had a $12 margarhita. I know, I know…in my defence I did not know the price ahead of time, but I started to have suspicians when the first sip sent me sputtering for some lemon and salt. I think they gave me a fifth of the bottle and the worm besides! Yikess! Things got really interesting at dinner as my companions were two Aussies, a Spanish Lady, a Philipino American, Christy and I, the token Canuck. Christy tried to do the different accents and that sent us off all on more sputtering bouts of laughter. We’ve promised to get together again at CHA this summer to do this all again and so I guess I’m going. It’s in Chicago again this year so I will have to save my pennies. I will say this – as I spent most of the last 3 days in the very fun company of 2 Australians my speech has been slightly "Ozzified". I apologize for this now. It is truly one of the most hypnotic and charming accents to listen to and I will try to get myself back under control as quickly as possible.
I have so much information tumbling around in my head from so many different people that it will take longer than a few hours to sort it all out. I do know that the cost out of pocket for these past few days is a pittance in the wealth of knowledge I have received.

I am so thankful.

Day Two of Ranger U...

...hey that rhymes.

Rightio then...moving along...Day Two started us off with a new teacher - one Claudine Helmuth at the 'Helm' of the classroom with her fab products and techniques. What I love about this experience is that we get answers to our questions from the source. No rumor, no "I heard from a friend who heard from..." we get the straight dope on the why's and what's and 'who invented this anyways?'

Also to hear some of the stories of some of the goings-on behind the scenes are a right stitch, and Tim is a great storyteller.

Back to the day. Claudine is a very talented artist who has painted for over 20 years. Through her extensive experience with acrylic paint, she has created to her own specifics an acrylic paint that is smooth and buttery (just not on popcorn) and rich in colour and variety. We used paint, along with 4 different gel type mediums to do her signature techniques and this was great as my exposure to painting has been limited. We mixed painting with stamping, transferring images and even embossing into paint (I can't really explain it better right now - v. tired). I will show all when I get back.

These are projects completed by Claudine that she brought for us to view, like a mini trunk show. Our techniques were also done on tags that, for some reason, I didn't do a group photo of when I was done them. Sorry!

Then we broke for lunch, provided by Ranger, and when we returned we got to do some crafting of our new techniques on a wooden basket(?). I am not the speediest scrapper in the world, so I didn't get mine done, but it was great to see the ones around me. Very inspiring.

After that we tucked into 5 hours of Distress Products - prefaced by a very elightening story of how Tim came to work for Ranger in the first place, which lead into what makes Distress inks, and the Distress line different from other inks on the market. I didn't realize how much chemistry was involved, although I would have had I stopped to think about it, but apparently their chemist is something of a wizard who was able to take Tims creative Distress product ideas and turn them into reality. Regardless there IS a difference between other dye inks and the Distress inks, and it has to everything to do with how they react to water. Love it!

But we started with Distress Embossing Powder, which I am still trying to get the hang of. We worked on paper as well as Metal which then lead to prepping tags with crackle paint (which had to dry) Then the inks themselves, the reinkers, the stains, and the stickles. We worked with a crafting iron, grunge board, metal flowers, stickyback canvas, trim and of course, cardstock. I have to say that if I had to pick one word that would define Ranger in any aspect, it is 'thorough'. 'Orgazined' would be the close second - both things I try to be and maybe will be when I grow up. =)

A few samples from an afternoon well spent.

We were done at 7pm, at which point a double car load of us decided to go down to the Jersey Shore line (not the actual Jersey Shore of the tv series, but we were at the northern end of it) and here is a pic of their lovely boardwalk and shopping district. We had dinner at a diner named 'Stewart's and the food was 'ok'. I hope to have Sushi tomorrow night at a place called 'Sawa's.

And so that is how my day ends - with a leisurely meal with new friends and new ideas. I want to thank you for checking out my blog tonite, and I have full intentions of blogging tomorrow night, after which point I will be packing and getting ready to return the next day to my home and hearth. Have a lovely Sunday and we'll see you soon!
